The vitamin E swab

With the Advanced Kit, use the swab after the treatment. Hold it upright with the red line at the top, snap the line, let the liquid run down, and rub the bottom end on the gums. Any white areas get it first, then the lips and remaining gums.

Finish properly

1. Take the finishing shade and record it. Put the retractor back in if they want an after photo.
2. Tell them how many shades they moved. This is the moment they decide whether it was worth it.
3. Give them an aftercare card and go through it rather than handing it over.

What they must not do

• Nothing to eat or drink except water for one hour.
• Follow the white diet for 24 to 48 hours.
• The worst four for staining are red wine, coffee, tea and cola.

Explain why, because a reason is followed and a rule is not. The pores of their teeth are open and they are at their most vulnerable to staining. That is the window that decides how the result looks in a month.

The 24 hour window

After a treatment the pores stay open for around 24 hours. If a client does not want all three sessions in one visit, they can come back the next day and carry on, but it has to be within 24 hours of the last session. Past that the pores have closed and you are starting again.

Send them home with a touch-up pen and tell them to use it for at least five days. The take home gel keeps the pores open so the whitening goes deep and the result lasts. This is the difference between a client who is happy today and a client who is happy in a month.

Rebooking

Tell them how long results last and when to come back. It depends on the stains they started with, their age, how their enamel took the peroxide, and what they eat and drink. Two rounds can move a client up to eight shades, and a third round does better again.
